Allergies or a Cold? How to Tell the Difference in Kids

Girl sneezing into tissue — a classic allergic rhinitis symptom

“Is it allergies, or is she catching a cold again?” is a question a lot of parents find themselves asking — especially during the months when both are common. The two conditions can look remarkably alike on the surface, but a few key differences can help point you in the right direction.

Clues that point toward allergies

  • Symptoms last for weeks — sometimes months — rather than resolving within a week or two
  • Symptoms tend to show up or worsen in certain environments or seasons (outdoors during high pollen counts, in dusty rooms, around pets)
  • Itchy, watery eyes and an itchy nose or throat are common — itching is far less typical of a cold
  • Nasal discharge tends to be clear and thin
  • No fever, body aches, or the “run-down” feeling that often comes with a viral illness

Clues that point toward a cold

Allergic rhinitis produces clear discharge and no fever; a cold brings thick discharge and fatigue

  • Symptoms come on somewhat suddenly and typically resolve within seven to ten days
  • A sore throat, cough, mild fever, or body aches are often part of the picture
  • Nasal discharge often starts clear and may thicken or change color over the course of the illness
  • Other household members or classmates may be getting sick around the same time

When the two overlap

It's entirely possible — and common — for a child to have both at once, or for allergies to make a cold feel more intense and linger longer than it otherwise would. If symptoms keep dragging on, keep coming back at the same time every year, or don't respond the way you'd expect, that pattern itself is useful information.

If you find yourself wondering “is this allergies again?” more often than not, it may be worth having your child evaluated. Knowing what you're actually dealing with can make treatment far more effective — and save you a few unnecessary trips for cold medicine that was never going to help in the first place.
