Why Is My Baby Wheezing? When It’s Normal and When to Get It Checked

The first time you hear your baby make a whistling or rattly sound while breathing, it can be unsettling. The good news is that wheezing in infants and toddlers is common, and it has a wide range of causes — many of which are temporary and resolve on their own as little airways grow.

Why little airways wheeze more easily

An infant's airways are naturally smaller and softer than an older child's, which means even a small amount of swelling, mucus, or irritation can cause a noticeable whistling sound. Common causes include colds and other viral infections, reflux, and — in some children — early signs of asthma or another airway condition that becomes clearer with age.

When wheezing is usually nothing to worry about

Early wheezing before age 3 does not always predict asthma — many children outgrow it

  • It happens only during a cold and clears up as the cold resolves
  • Your child is otherwise feeding, playing, and growing normally
  • Breathing looks comfortable — no significant extra effort, retractions, or pauses

When it's worth getting checked

  • Wheezing happens often, or outside of colds
  • You notice fast or labored breathing, flaring nostrils, or the skin pulling in around the ribs
  • Feeding becomes difficult because your child is working hard to breathe
  • Wheezing lingers for more than a few days or keeps coming back

Most babies who wheeze grow into healthy kids with no lasting breathing issues. But repeated or persistent wheezing is exactly the kind of pattern worth having evaluated — not because something is necessarily wrong, but because an early look can clarify what's going on and make sure your child has the right support as they grow.
